Permanent Hair Removal

It depends. In principle, the darker the hair and the lighter the skin (meaning a greater contrast), the better the results. Many patients come to our practice believing that laser treatment is not an option for them, but they are mistaken. We can generally remove blonde hair as well, but the success of the treatment depends on how tanned your skin is compared to the color of your hair.

The only hair colors we cannot effectively treat are white, extremely light blonde, and, in most cases, red hair. The reason for this is that during the treatment, the laser device targets the brown pigments in the hair (melanin). The laser beams are attracted by the brown particles in the hair. The hair conducts the laser energy in the form of heat to the hair follicle. This destroys the hair-forming stem cells in the hair follicle, preventing further hair growth.

Very light blonde or white hair lacks brown pigments, as do most red hairs. The laser beam has no target, it cannot be captured, and it cannot be directed into the hair follicle. We ask our patients regularly during the treatment about any discomfort to ensure they are tolerating the hair removal well. Additionally, Dr.med.univ. Kerbler (A) herself has undergone laser hair removal and can speak from experience. The conclusion: there is some pain, but it is not very strong. It's similar to the sensation of snapping a rubber band against your skin. An integrated cooling system in the laser head provides an additional reduction in pain through the cooling effect.

It is very rare for a break to be necessary because the pain is no longer tolerable. Some patients have more sensitive skin than others. It is also a general rule that a modern laser equals a lower risk of pain, while flash therapy (IPL system, please do not confuse with laser hair removal) equals a higher risk of pain. In our practice, we use a special laser exclusively for hair removal. This laser specifically targets the brown pigments in the hair, sparing the surrounding skin, which significantly reduces pain.

Our laser works best when as many hairs as possible are present in your hair follicles, as they act as "conductors" into the depth of the root. Therefore, we recommend that during the month before laser treatment, you exclusively shave and do not pluck or epilate. Please shave the affected areas thoroughly again in the evening before laser hair removal.

Your skin will be irritated by the hair removal. Therefore, after each session, apply a cooling cream or body lotion to minimize side effects like redness. Also, protect the affected areas from the sun. For this, we recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of 50+.

Laser hair removal with our high-tech laser is a very gentle and mild procedure. Immediately after the treatment, the affected area may swell slightly and become red. This is normal and will disappear on its own in a few hours to days. In rare cases, small blisters or pigment shifts may occur.

If something like this occurs after a session, please contact us immediately and do not attempt to remove the blisters under any circumstances.  It is also important that the treated skin is not too tanned, as this can irritate the laser, leading to blisters or burns. However, through our years of experience, we identify such cases in advance and advise against hair removal with our laser to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Only about 20 percent of our hairs are in the growth phase, where the stem cell and hair are close together and can be accurately targeted by the laser. Therefore, several sessions are necessary to permanently remove all the hair. Depending on the phase your hair follicles are in, we can help you achieve hairless, smooth skin in five to eight sessions. To maintain the lifelong result, we recommend a touch-up once a year.

The cost of laser hair removal depends on the size of the area to be treated and the number of sessions required. Smaller areas like the upper lip, for example, cost CHF 150.
